Fargesia rufa - Fargesia spreading/rusty
Origin
It comes from the Chinese provinces of Gansu and Sichuan, where it grows at an altitude of 1000-2500 meters above sea level. In those regions, winters are frosty and summers are hot, which makes this bamboo well adapted to our climate as well.
Description
Rufa produces shoots about 1 cm in diameter, which are decorated with orange-red or dark pink sheaths, so-called "sheaths". The leaves of this bamboo are light green, pointed, narrow and measure about 8 x 0.75 cm.
Growth
Fargesia rufa is a clump bamboo, meaning it has short rhizomes called pachymorphic. These grow close together, allowing new shoots to grow in a single clump wherever the plant is planted.
Cultivation in the ground
Mulching
In the first few years after planting, bamboos in the ground should be mulched. This will help maintain adequate soil moisture, which is crucial for bamboo cultivation, especially when new shoots are emerging. Mulching will also protect the root ball from frost.
Pruning
Fargesia rufa grows vigorously, spreading its shoots widely. Pruning/shaping is necessary to achieve a compact form.
Growing in a pot
Fargesia rufa is one of the best bamboos for pots. Choose the largest possible pot, preferably frost-resistant. If you plan to overwinter the plant outdoors, you should insulate it internally with Styrofoam. You can also overwinter potted bamboos in a bright, cool room.
