Origin

It comes from the Chinese provinces of Sichuan and Zhejiang.

Description

Phyllostachys bissetti is one of the most frost-resistant woody bamboos. In our climate, it grows to a height of approximately 7 meters. Young shoots are dark green with a maximum diameter of 5 cm, turning olive as they mature. The leaves are dark green, small, and dense, approximately 9 cm long and 1.5 cm wide.

Growth

In the first few years after planting, before bamboo is well established, its growth rate is moderate. In the third year after planting, it accelerates significantly, and in the fifth year, it shows its true potential. Each season, it produces more and more new shoots. New shoots are up to 90-150 cm taller than those it produced the previous year. New shoots are also thicker and stiffer. In well-rooted Phyllostachys, new shoots can grow as much as 30 cm in a day.

Cultivation in the ground

When planting woody bamboos like Phyllostachys bissetti, if you want them to grow only in a designated area, you should use a root barrier. This is a thick HDPE sheet buried in the ground around the area you don't want the plant to grow beyond. In the first few years after planting, bamboos in the ground should be mulched. This will help maintain adequate soil moisture, which is very important for growing bamboos, which love water, especially when they are sprouting new shoots. Mulching will also protect the root ball from frost.

Growing in a pot

You can also grow bamboo in a pot. Choose the largest possible pot, preferably frost-resistant. If you plan to overwinter the plant outdoors, you should insulate it with Styrofoam. You can also overwinter potted bamboo in a bright, cool room.
