Bamboo Phyllostachys vivax f. huangwenzhu
Description
Phyllostachys vivax f. huangwenzhu is an amazing woody bamboo that can reach up to 8 meters in height in our climate. It produces very thick, light green shoots up to 13 cm in diameter. The shoot internodes feature clearly visible yellow stripes, which add to the bamboo's attractive appearance. Vivax's fresh-green leaves are large, measuring approximately 13 x 2.5 cm.

Growth
In the first few years after planting, before bamboo is well established, its growth rate is moderate. In the third year after planting, it accelerates significantly, and in the fifth year, it shows its true potential. Each season, it produces more and more new shoots. New shoots are up to 90-150 cm taller than those it produced the previous year. New shoots are also thicker and stiffer. In well-rooted Phyllostachys, new shoots can grow as much as 30 cm in a day.

Cultivation in the ground
Phyllostachys vivax is a leptomorphic bamboo, and we recommend using a root barrier when planting in the ground. This involves digging a thick HDPE sheet into the ground around the area beyond which the plant should not grow. This method will limit the bamboo's growth to the designated area.
Mulching
In the first few years after planting, bamboos in the ground should be mulched. This will help maintain adequate soil moisture, which is crucial for bamboo cultivation, especially when new shoots are emerging. Mulching will also protect the root ball from frost.
